I Hate Money

“For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10

I hate money. Well, I of course love money because that’s how we live but I hate that. I hate that so many people are judged by the amount of money they have because it reflects their lifestyle. And I’m talking about small and large amounts. I hate that some may not have much but are handed money by others and seem to be very ungrateful.  I hate that some don’t have as much as they’d like, the majority, and some choose to let that consume them. I hate that some don’t have enough to even feed themselves and their families and some have so much they could feed the entire state and choose not to. Money consumes a lot of us and I despise that very thought.

Money is the cause of a lot of fights, arguments, broken relationships and promises and the list goes on and on.  A friend posted a devotional several months ago and it has spoken to me ever since so I thought I would share in hopes this speaks to others as well.

Why does the Bible take such a strong position against loving money? Perhaps because of the power we give to money. If we aren’t careful, we place a greater emphasis on gaining money and maintaining possessions as a greater priority than loving our family and friends. Or worse, our mind becomes consumed with thoughts of money and how much things cost more than thinking of God. Is the majority of your thoughts and attention focused on conversing, increasing or saving money? If so, could you be piercing yourself with many sorrows? (From unknown source)

“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.” Ecclesiastes 5:10

After seeing the lives of the majority of Haitians that live on less than two dollars a week this topic has been laying extra heavy on my heart ever since. I’ve have witnessed with my own eyes the root of evil from money tearing apart families. It is very very easy to let our thoughts focus on money instead of the love of God. "Money is a powerful temptation, with great power to destroy our faith and life purposes."

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

Is money ruling your thoughts and life? The world revolves around money but does your world only revolve around money? I’ve challenged myself to begin making a conscious effort to refocus my thoughts on God’s words he has given us when I start to see my thoughts focused too much on the love of money.
